Burnside was born in Liberty, Indiana and was the fourth of nine children of Edghill and Pamela (or Pamilia) Brown Burnside, a family of Scottish origin. His great-great-grandfather Robert Burnside (1725–1775) was born in Scotland and settled in the Province of South Carolina. Stanly, Edward A.

Oakland resident John A. Stanly, a San Francisco attorney and judge, owned the Rincon de los Carneros Rancho, originally part of the 1836 land grant of Nicholas Higuera. His son, Edward Stanly, managed the ranch beginning in the late 1870s; he was particularly charged with managing the dairy farming and dairying.
